Mary E. Walters, MA, NCC, LMHC
At Clearview OCD Counseling, I am passionate about treating OCD and related disorders including body dysmorphia, panic attacks, phobias, and anxiety. I also treat general life stressors. Although I work with all ages, I particularly thrive in my work with adolescents and young adults. I am dedicated to helping clients reach their personal goals and live more fulfilling lives where anxiety, dread, and regret are things of the past!
I also take special interest in couples work and sex therapy using a sex-positive approach. All aspects of a client’s life and relationships are valued, and I strive to create a warm, welcoming environment for my clients who practice polyamory, are LGBTQIA+, or are otherwise part of diverse communities.
I am a nationally certified counselor (NCC) and received my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University. I am currently writing a book with my former professors about integrating creative mindfulness with trauma-informed care and had an article published in 2020 for the Journal of Creativity in Mental Health. My internship and practicum were both conducted at Clearview OCD Counseling, and I have completed intensive training in ERP, ACT, and CBT with Jayme Valdez as well as the International OCD Foundation.
Before Northwestern, I received my Bachelor’s degree from Davidson College where I gained valuable knowledge working in the Cognitive Lab, the Child Development Lab, and the Behavioral Pharmacology Lab, by conducting my own research using fitness tracking technology and body image concerns, and by working on the Life Stories Project, where I actively worked to bridge the life stories between the older generation and current college students in my Davidson community.
The majority of my undergraduate focus was spent helping women on campus with eating disorder symptomatology through NEDA’s ‘The Body Project,’ working with first generation immigrant children and their families to improve school performance in literature and numeracy from Spanish speaking countries through Dr. Leyva’s ‘Food For Thought’ program, and working with children with ASD in integrated elementary classrooms. Additionally, I spent the past few years working as a Peer Academic Coach and mentoring college students on healthy work-life balance, helping them achieve their academic and personal goals.
