Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of cognitive-behavior therapy that promotes psychological and behavioral flexibility. When clients present for therapy, they are often struggling with an overly-rigid way of thinking and, thus, a constrained way of moving about the world. ACT helps loosen this up using evidence-based treatment interventions, including:
- Mindfulness (making contact with the present moment)
- Acceptance (“shaking hands” with reality, acknowledging what is)
- Commitment to valued behavior (acting in congruence with your values system rather than your anxieties)
- Letting go of entanglement with thoughts and feelings
- Observing one’s internal experience rather than over-engaging with it
- Approaching rather than avoiding
We will guide you through how to start incorporating the philosophies of ACT throughout your life. The goal of treatment is not to give you band-aids to put on individual thoughts or feelings you are struggling with but to give you a whole new way of being in relationship with your thoughts and feelings so that they disturb you less.
